Behind the Design

During the early days of the war for independence, when the smoke from gunfire still lingered over the fields of Lexington and Concord, the military needed a flag to distinguish the newly formed American forces from the British. One of the first flags used was the "Appeal to Heaven" or "Pine Tree" flag. This flag featured the eastern white pine tree, which was known as the "tree of life" to those in New England, set against a white background. It was easily recognizable and became a symbol of the independence movement. Some historians associate this flag with General Putnam's troops at Bunker Hill. Additionally, it was raised on naval vessels under General George Washington's command, known as Washington's Raiders, who successfully captured a British transport ship that was attempting to relieve the besieged British forces in Boston.
