In 1775, as tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain reached a breaking point, a bold warning emerged alongside the fight for independence.
Designed by Colonel Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina, the yellow flag featured a coiled rattlesnake above the now-iconic words: “DON’T TREAD ON ME.”

Gadsden presented the flag to the newly formed Continental Marines, where it became a powerful emblem of resistance against tyranny and foreign control.

During the American Revolutionary War, the flag stood as a message to the Crown and the world alike: Americans would defend their liberty at any cost.
