For the month of February Grunt Style pays homage to an American War Hero, Medal of Honor and Navy Cross recipient, USMC Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone ("Manilla John").
John Basilone was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle for Henderson Field in the Guadalcanal Campaign. Upon returning home he participated in War Bond Tours. Basilone requested to go back overseas, which the Marine Corps initially denied, instead they offered him a commission and then an instructor position, both of which Basilone refused. His next request to go back overseas was approved and he re-enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1944.
John Basilone was KIA on 19 February, 1945 in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroic actions.
